Ministry of Education and Brickfields Asia College collaborate on freeschool.my to improve student learning outcomes

Kuala Lumpur, 12 September, 2017 – freeschool.my, a not for profit multilingual learning portal targeting students sitting for Malaysian public exams is open for enrollment starting today. Fully funded by Brickfields Asia College (BAC) and supported by the Ministry of Education, the online learning platform aims to extend the reach of and maximize the impact achieved by EduNation, Malaysia’s largest free primary and secondary school online resource; also funded by BAC. At the launch event, 300 teachers from national schools within the Klang Valley were presented with printed versions of e-Books that are currently available on the portal.

“With the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Education, we are proud to offer freeschool.my as a gift to Malaysian students and teachers – in line with our continuous efforts to transform lives through education. The freeschool.my model is also built for scalability; with the potential to reach beyond our borders to other countries within the ASEAN region. That is a milestone we will look towards as we continue to grow freeschool.my,” said Raja Singham, Founder of freeshool.my and Managing Director of BAC.

freeschool.my currently offers a specialized site for SPM students and will gradually roll out additional site updates for PT3 and UPSR subjects as well.

The SPM site is equipped with free e-Books (for Additional Mathematics, Modern Mathematics, Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Sejarah), practical exercises as well as seminars and webinars for all core SPM subjects. These offerings complement a comprehensive library of over 700 videos featuring highly experienced teachers covering these subjects in Bahasa Malaysia and English. As the portal continues to grow, there are plans to include even more videos in Mandarin and Tamil – including those for PT3 and UPSR subjects.

In addition to developing bespoke content tailored to improve learning outcomes, the freeschool.my team will continue to enrich and expand its offerings by also engaging Malaysian teachers in free training sessions. These training sessions will highlight learning points on topics including blended learning and the use of technology in classroom environments.

To date, freeschool.my has benefited over 100,000 students and trained over 1,200 teachers nationwide.

Leveraging Public-Private Partnerships to Deliver Quality Educational Content

With as many as 22 million active Internet users[1] and a nationwide Internet penetration rate of 77.9%, Malaysia is in a good position to harness the power of online learning to widen access to good quality content and enhance the quality of teaching and learning. These are desired outcomes already outlined in the National Education Blueprint 2013 – 2025 and lined up as change agents in line with Transformasi Nasional 2050 aspirations.

freeschool.my taps into the current transformation of pedagogy that has become increasingly social and collaborative in nature[2]. Through the Internet and widespread compute technology, educational outcomes are improved by leveraging technology to captivate minds, engage students and enhance both the teaching and learning experience.

“As we step up our efforts to empower and equip all Malaysian students for lifelong excellence – starting with universal access to quality education, the responsibility for raising a generation of educated citizens has broadened beyond the purview of the government to include the involvement of the community at large,” said Education Minister Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid  who was present at the launch.

“The launch of freeschool.my is particularly timely during this time of celebration with Hari Kemerdekaan and the upcoming Hari Malaysia. freeschool.my is a prime example of the sort of public-private partnership that we seek; to complement Malaysia’s teaching and learning ecosystem and build a truly world class education system capable of developing youths who will become the leaders of tomorrow.”
