Malaysian Youth Delegation- Climate Mitigation and Economy
Make it Right Movement (MIRM) partnered with Malaysian Youth Delegation (MYD) to organise a second study session titled “Climate Mitigation and Economy” participated by six members of the MYD. The program was held at the PJ Campus of Brickfields Asia College which participants found to be an accessible venue using the Asia Jaya LRT station. The event took place on the 13th July 2019 from 10am-12pm.
The session begun with an informative lecture on the current status of climate mitigation and the economy. Participants were briefed on the introduction of climate change and central factors contributing to climate change. A thorough discussion was made as to intensified actions taken by foreign countries over the past years to combat climate change, such as the Paris Agreement. Foreign terms such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) were explained to participants who were intrigued about the operations which countries run to reduce national carbon emissions. Further into the session, MYD members were given an insight on Malaysia’s efforts to resolve climate change which the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC) Minister described as “low hanging fruits”. It demonstrated how simple actions can lead to large improvements in climate change whether done by an individual or large institutions.
In the second half of the session, participants shared their knowledge and opinions about the capability of different countries to adopt measures in reducing climate change by implementing carbon taxation or trading. Many MYD members felt that they had an improved understanding of Malaysia’s efforts on climate change mitigation and Malaysia’s standing on carbon trading and tax. The interactive program was an eye-opening session for the MYD members who gained knowledge on how they can reduce effects of climate change on the environment and habitable species. Many came from different backgrounds therefore various experiences and knowledge in relation to climate change were shared with other participants. Discussions were made on the efficiency of energy measures as well as existing avenues in Malaysia to reduce carbon emissions.
The study session also focused on different aspects of climate adaptation in Malaysia in accordance to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Emphasis was placed on the universal importance of establishing a wholesome green economic system in order to generate a source of climate funding.
Participants found the session enlightening and informative as the classroom setting provided a conducive learning experience. The youth play an integral role in both the intergovernmental climate change negotiations and their communities. Educating the Malaysian Youth Delegation members has proven to be a successful measure to preserve human health and the environment for future generations.
